Shirley Karsner Garber, 90, passed away Sept.

 

Shirley Karsner Garber, 90, passed away Sept. 19, 2011, in Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center Hospice.

Shirley was born Dec. 2, 1920, in Duluth. She attended Duluth East Junior High and graduated from Duluth Central at the age of 16.

She graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1940. She worked for the USO in the 1940s. She raised a family. She worked with her husband, Jack Garber, at the Captain’s Table in Duluth. She was the catering manager of Garber Catering at the DECC for almost 20 years.

She was a loving and caring person who had a flair for cooking and entertaining. She contributed to cookbooks and taught. The last 20 years, she was highly visible in the UMD University for Seniors. As an inventor of political oriented classes and also teaching Hebrew she was well known, as was her ability to play bridge. She has been active as a leader at the Temple Israel Synagogue her whole life, chairing committees, and baking and creating fundraisers. In addition, she continued her husband’s mission of putting on the Christmas dinner at the Union Gospel Mission of Duluth, which is still supported by the Jewish community to this day.

She was a life member of the Hadassah Woman’s Organization as a local president and regional board member up until just recently. She was a board member of the UMD Holocaust Committee, which puts on a program remembering the murder of six million Jews and 1.5 million others by Hitler. As an active volunteer for the Duluth Symphony for 37 years, her baked goods were enjoyed by the musicians at all the rehearsals. She was voted Twin Ports Woman of the Year in 1994. Shirley was active, visible and vibrant everywhere she was known.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Garber; and her parents, Ben and Edith Karsner.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Nina Garber; sons Micah (Michal) and Leonard (Gwyneth); her grandchildren, Ron, Dafna, Donna and Jacob; sisters Rita Margalit of Jerusalem, Israel, and Phyllis Dietz Bierman of Chicago, Ill.; numerous nieces and nephews; many cousins and many dear friends.

A special thank you to Theresa and Jan and support staff at St. Mary’s Hospital Hospice Inpatient Care for helping Shirley and our family through this difficult process.

FUNERAL: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, in Temple Israel, 1602 E. Second St., Duluth. Shiva will be at the Garber home at 7 p.m., that night and the next night. For more information and directions, call the Temple Israel office at (218) 724-8857.
